Koi Release at Portland Japanese Garden.

In conjunction with The Childrens day celebration on May 7th, 2011, The Portland Japanese Garden, released 18 koi to the upper Koi Pond. In 2008 winter storm in Portland, Oregon, Garden lost almost all of their koi. During that time, none of the garden helpers could get to the garden because of the heavy snow. The Koi suffocated due to the layer of ice that covered the pond and died. Koi needed air circulation to breath and it needs at lease 4 feet deep pond to survive winter. After this, Japanese Garden did a huge rennovations to the Koi Ponds and made it safe for the koi. The lower pond rennovation is still going on and it will be ready soon. Koi Pond renovation works at The Portland Japanese Garden.

In 2010, with the help of a koi keepers funding, Japanese Garden officials were able to contract with Tony Prew the owner of All Japan Koi, to do some maintenance on the Pond. He was able to install filtration system and skimmers. He was also able to remodel the pond to make the pond a little deeper. This helps koi to overcome heavy winter. The koi needs at least 4 feet deep pond to overcome the winter. Polyurea liner was coated on sides to overcome leaks. Now Japanese Garden is trying to find funds for bringing Koi to the garden and bring back the Koi population of the garden. More information can be found at The Japanese Garden website .
